A maker of iron castings for multiple industries is planning a $3.5-million expansion in the area.
Walker-based Betz Industries has purchased a 51.5-acre site next to its headquarters, which is at 2121 Bristol Ave. NW, and plans to construct a 41,280-square-foot industrial building on the site, which could be expanded via additions to up to 165,120 square feet.
Construction is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2019. The company expects the building to be operational by the fourth quarter of 2019.
Gregory Betz, co-owner of Betz Industries, said the building will be used for “rough 2D machining of the gray and ductile iron castings produced in our casting center.”
“We had a number of inquiries from our customer base to perform this work in the past, and it will allow us to have better control and feedback on our casting process,” he said. “Acquiring the property directly adjacent to the west of our current location gives us more options for any future expansions.”
The company supplies iron castings to the automotive, wind energy and tooling industries.
Betz Industries purchased the land in February from Triick Resource Recovery. It was formerly the site of a sand mining operation.
The proposed site plan filed at the Walker Planning Commission’s Aug. 1 meeting calls for parking, landscaping, stormwater and related site improvements.
Betz estimates the building and infrastructure will cost $3.5 million. The total cost of the project has not been identified.
The expansion will be privately funded, although the company may apply for a tax abatement, Betz said.
Betz Industries plans to hire 10-15 employees — including CNC machinists, CAD programmers and maintenance — within the first year of operations.
The company estimates the site has capacity to house 45 employees “at full build out,” according to documents filed with the planning commission.
Walker-based John W. Potter is the project’s contractor.
