A local steel products supplier was certified as an Exceptional Women’s Business Enterprise.

Cascade Township-based Mill Steel Co., owned by chair and CEO Pam Heglund, said Wednesday, Feb. 9, it received its national certification as an Exceptional Women’s Business Enterprise (EWBE) by the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC). With revenue over $500 million, the company is among the top 2% largest WBEs in the U.S., Mill Steel said.

“We are always looking for ways to enhance our customer service and meet the needs of modern steel buyers. This certification allows us to help businesses achieve their supplier diversity goals and aligns with our commitment to fostering diversity,” Heglund said.

WBENC is the largest certifier of women’s business enterprises in the U.S. and an advocate for women business owners, leaders and entrepreneurs. Its certification process includes an in-depth review and site inspection of the business seeking accreditation, designed to confirm the business is at least 51% woman-owned, -operated and -controlled.

Heglund took over ownership of Mill Steel, the company her grandfather founded, in early 2021.

Mill Steel said it looks forward to growing its relationship with like-minded businesses and government agencies that want to demonstrate their commitment to supplier diversity by including women-owned businesses among their suppliers.
