The much-anticipated $30 million marketplace the Grand Action Committee and the Downtown Development Authority are building on Ionia Avenue SW has an official name and a virtual presence beginning today.
The market’s board of directors named the marketplace the Downtown Market late last week and agreed to launch a variety of online platforms that will communicate market activities, share food-related information and experiences, and engage with customers.
“The Downtown Market aspires to become a vibrant hub for our local food movement in both the real and virtual world,” said George Aquino, chairman of the Downtown Market board and president of the JW Marriott Hotel, in a release.
“We’re thrilled to launch our web-based platforms and will continue the work of readying the new public market facility for opening day next summer,” he added.
The market’s website address is domagrandrapids.com. The site also offers links to three social media sites: Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr.
The Downtown Market is going up on the west side of Ionia Avenue, just south of Wealthy Street. It’s set to open next summer and will feature rooftop greenhouses, year-round indoor stalls for vendors to sell fresh foods, a commercially certified production kitchen, a community demonstration kitchen and event space for community meetings.
The Downtown Market will also offer food education and have the nation’s first demonstration kitchen for kids.
