Meijer has teamed up with an app-based grocery delivery company to roll out home delivery on the state’s east side.

Walker-based Meijer said today that it will begin offering home delivery service to the Detroit market on Sept. 15 through a partnership with Shipt.

The service will allow users to shop through 55,000 items from 25 Detroit-area stores and then choose a one-hour window for delivery.

The service will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, except for some holidays.

"This is yet one more option to make shopping at Meijer easier for our customers," said Michael Ross, VP of Digital Shopping and Customer Marketing, Meijer. "We believe our relationship with Shipt will provide many of our customers an all-encompassing service that will save them time and add a new convenience when shopping at Meijer."

Meijer Director of Digital Shopping Art Sebastian said select Grand Rapids stores offer curbside delivery, and the retailer is performing small-scale delivery in West Michigan.

Sebastian said there are no immediate plans to launch wide-scale delivery in Grand Rapids or other markets.

“We continue to study our consumers,” Sebastian said. “We’re always seeking ways to make shopping easier.”

Shipt is a membership service. For $99 a year, users receive unlimited deliveries on grocery orders of more than $35.

Customers who sign up for Shipt prior to the launch will receive $25 off their first deliveries.

The Detroit market launch will be the 29th market for Shipt, which has offices in San Francisco and Birmingham, Alabama.

“Through our relationship with Meijer, we will make life easier for busy individuals and families and also create jobs in the Detroit area,” said Bill Smith, founder and CEO, Shipt.

Shipt was started 18 months ago and focuses primarily on grocery delivery, but it also offers alcohol delivery in select markets, said Anne Adams, community manager, Shipt.
