Public hearings will be held by the Alliance for Health next week on four proposed health care construction or new equipment investments in West Michigan, which will each require a Certificate of Need issued by the state of Michigan.

Four projects will be discussed on June 5 and 6: a three room outpatient surgical center in eastern Grand Rapids by Metro Health Hospital, estimated to cost $13,801,423; a $92.4-million relocation of operating rooms at Mercy Health Partners in Muskegon; a new operating room at Muskegon Surgery Center for $460,000 and a $105,576 dental CT scanner at Comfort Family Dentistry in Zeeland.

Metro Health proposes to establish an outpatient surgical center with three multipurpose operating rooms in an existing medical office plaza — located near the intersection of Cascade Road and I-96 in Grand Rapids.

The surgical center will occupy 21,041 square feet of leased space. In addition to the operating rooms, the facility will include surgery prep and recovery, sterile processing, waiting rooms, administrative space and storage areas for supplies.

Of the $13,801,423 anticipated cost, $13,483,423 will be for leases of the space and equipment needed for the operating rooms. Metro Health Hospital will invest $318,000 of its own cash in the project.

The new facility will require 21.9 full time equivalent staff, including 10.8 RNs earning an average of $58,240 per year and one administrator at $81,994.

Metro Health is projecting that in the first year, the new outpatient surgical center will spend about 3,620 hours on 3,420 cases, with an average charge per case of $7,786. Average net revenue per case is estimated at $2,882 and cost is at $2,590, with an average profit per case of $292.

The Alliance for Health will hold a public hearing on these projects at Muskegon Community College on June 5 and in Grand Rapids on June 6, at 1345 Monroe Ave. NW.
