Details magazine recently released a list on the “Best Weird Brews of Summer.”
Harmony Brewing Co. was represented with its Cavendish Ale, which “mimics the essence of earthy pipe smoke,” by adding aged Mexican and Madagascar vanilla beans during fermentation and aged in oak barrels once used to house cherry bitters. (Up next for Harmony is a meteorite beer.)
Holland’s Our Brewing Co. also made the list with its Pirate Stout, brewed with gunpowder, molasses, allspice, coriander, black pepper and tangerine zest. Pirate Stout is due out in August.
Northern Michigan is represented with Traverse City’s Right Brain Brewery and its Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Whole. The brewery included 50 locally made strawberry rhubarb pies from Grand Traverse Pie Company.
A short drive brings the list to Short’s Brewing Co. in Bellaire, Mich., which appears on the list with its OMGWTFBBQ which includes hickory- and mesquite-smoked hops and tomato puree, brown sugar, molasses, cayenne and chili powder.
Fenton Winery & Brewery also made the list with Blackberry Merlot Double Cream Stout, which blends beer with wine.
Of course, none of these are nearly as weird as Rogue’s Beard Beer, which also appears on Details' list. The Oregon brewery included yeast from brewmaster John Maier’s beard.
