LANSING — Michigan Lottery ticket sales generated a record $2.6 billion in the 2014 budget year.

The lottery said last week that 2014 is the 10th straight year of sales over $2 billion. Sales reached about $2.48 billion in 2013.

The lottery said the higher sales were due primarily to an increase in instant games this year.

Prizes awarded to players reached a record $1.59 billion, up from $1.49 billion in 2013.

The lottery contributed about $740 million to the state School Aid Fund in 2014.

The sales record also led to record commissions for the lottery's nearly 11,000 retailers. Commissions totaled roughly $190 million this year, a nearly 6-percent increase from 2013.
