The local minor league basketball team for the Detroit Pistons has been given a name.
The NBA Development League’s Grand Rapids team announced its name today: the Grand Rapids Drive.
The team said the nickname pays homage to the region’s economic history and “closely connects it to the parent club’s automotive theme.”
The name was picked from four finalists picked by fans in an April contest.
The D-League team also revealed its logo today. The image is similar to the Detroit Pistons’ logo — with the team’s name in the middle of a basketball colored with the team’s red, white and blue colors.
“Today is an exciting day for the Grand Rapids Drive,” said Steve Jbara, team president. “Unveiling the team’s new logo is an important step in our history and brings the team one step closer to tipping off the season at the DeltaPlex.”
The Drive’s season will begin in November, with 24 home games at the 5,000-seat DeltaPlex Arena in Grand Rapids.
