Woodland Mall shoppers, be prepared for a sleepless Black Friday.
The 28th Street shopping center is planning for the first time ever to have the majority of its stores open at midnight for the biggest shopping day of the year.
Although about 25 percent of Woodland’s stores opened at midnight last year, said Woodland Mall Marketing Director Terry Leshuk, this year the mall already has about 40 percent of its 110 store tenants planning to do so, and expects up to at least 60 percent by Black Friday.
The remainder of the stores will open at 5 a.m. to service the 60,000-75,000 shoppers expected to visit the mall throughout the day.
“The consumers were very welcoming of that so it made sense to promote,” Leshuk said. “This is really consumer driven. The stores wouldn’t do it unless there was the demand out there from the retailers. From the mall’s standpoint, we’re supporting our retailers in response to our shoppers.”
The first 1,000 shoppers through the doors can feast at a refreshment table in the mall’s center court, complete with bottled water and fresh pastries from Nantucket Baking Co.
Leshuk said that according the National Retail Federation, retail stores registered sales of $550 billion for the entire holiday season last year. He sees a trend toward stores creating large events and special shopping days for customers.
“The star of the show is the value-driven promotions through our retailers,” he said. “This is such a huge kickoff to the holiday season. They’ve got to do a good deal of their profits on the day.”
