Michigan State University is planning to continue development at the site of its Grand Rapids Research Center downtown.
MSU said last week it plans to build another facility along Michigan Street, just east of the Grand Rapids Research Center, at 400 Monroe Ave. NW, for MSU programs and to lease space to tenants that will support the university’s research and health care programs.
The groundbreaking for the building is tentatively planned for next fall, with its opening anticipated in fall 2021.
The facility's tenants may include private industry and health care teams focused on various areas: the advanced diagnosis and treatment of cancer, neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders; development of medical devices that improve patient access, affordability and outcomes; and augmented intelligence and machine learning efforts.
The facility will also provide space to accommodate the growth of the human health research teams that exist in the research center and on MSU’s East Lansing campus.
The university said the project may include a building along Monroe Street, to the north of the current research building, for an undetermined university use.
Plans also outline a parking deck east of the possible Monroe Street building.
Following a request for proposals issued in July, the job was awarded to Health Innovation Partners, a joint venture among MB Real Estate, Walsh Construction/Walsh Investors and Grand Rapids-based Rockford Construction, through a long-term ground lease.
A tax incremental financing credit is available to the developer to construct a parking structure, which is required to meet city of Grand Rapids parking requirements on the site.
The project’s cost, full timeline and other details have not been determined by the developer, an MSU spokesperson said.
