A local music nonprofit has hired a “seasoned” fundraising professional as its new director of development.

St. Cecilia Music Center, or SCMC, in downtown Grand Rapids said yesterday that it has named Joe Jerz to the role.

Jerz impressed the center's board and management team with examples of how he has “inspired and built strong relationships with donors through discovering and fulfilling their philanthropic passions.”

Cathy Holbrook, SCMC executive director, said the organization is “thrilled to have such a seasoned fundraising professional” take on the role.

“Joe brings wonderful strengths and vision to the position, and we are happy to welcome him to the SCMC family,” she said.

Jerz's background

Most recently, Jerz served as senior director of major gifts at Heart of West Michigan United Way, where he was responsible for securing contributions of $10,000 or more annually from individual donors.

Previously, he served as director of major gifts at United Way of Metropolitan Chicago, where he generated large-scale donations, as well as founded the Young Leaders Society, a “highly successful” young professionals group. The group earned him praise in Non-Profit Times as “one of the most successful and noteworthy leaders in the nonprofit sector.”

Jerz has also worked as a national account manager for the Fortune 500 technology company CDW.

In the community, Jerz has participated in and orchestrated various small- and large-scale volunteer projects with a number of organizations: the Exelon-ComEd Stay in School Initiative; Grand Rapids Ballet; Off the Street Club; The Carol Robertson Center for Learning; and Habitat for Humanity, among others.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Western Illinois University and an M.B.A. from Lewis University.
