The CEO of a national health system’s Michigan operations is taking a promotion.
Dr. Joseph Cacchione is transitioning from his role as Ascension SVP and Detroit-based CEO of Ascension Michigan to serve as the Edmundson, Missouri-based system’s EVP of clinical and network services, effective July 1.
Cacchione accepted his current role in September 2018.
In Michigan, Ascension operates 15 hospitals, including the three Borgess hospitals, and hundreds of related health care facilities that together employ more than 26,000 associates.
In his new role, Cacchione will lead the unification of Ascension’s clinical and care excellence functions and subsidiaries.
The new national division brings together many parts of Ascension: the provider group; community health ministries; palliative care; population health management; managed care; national clinical service lines; clinically integrated networks; and provider recruitment and retention.
“Bringing these functions and subsidiaries together creates a unique opportunity to play a vital role in positioning Ascension for the future and to operate in a manner that transforms health care and proactively addresses the holistic needs of our patients,” Cacchione said.
Cacchione began at Ascension in 2017 as head of its medical group.
He came from Cleveland Clinic, where he held leadership positions, including chair of operations and strategy for the clinic’s Heart & Vascular Institute.
Cacchione is board certified in internal medicine, cardiology and interventional cardiology. His medical degree is from the Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, and his undergraduate degree is from Gannon University in Erie, Pennsylvania.
While a new CEO for Ascension Michigan is identified, Dr. Thomas Stover will provide interim executive leadership for the statewide market.
Stover was interim president of Kalamazoo-based Ascension Borgess last year while a search was conducted for its new president.
Stover has held several health system executive roles, including for Cleveland Clinic.
Ascension operates 2,600 facilities, including 151 hospitals and more than 50 senior living facilities, in 21 states and the District of Columbia.
