Nonprofit co-founders moving on

A nonprofit that helps parents adjust to caring for newborns is seeking a new leader as its co-founders prepare to step aside.

Grand Rapids-based MomsBloom co-founders Sara Binkley-Tow and Angela Walters announced  that they will be stepping down from the business they launched in 2008. The organization is searching for an interim executive director.

MomsBloom sends volunteers into the homes of parents with newborn babies to address a shortage of social support. The Sante Fe, New Mexico-based Many Mothers program inspired it.

Binkley-Tow said MomsBloom is well established enough that they are ready to transfer management to someone who can take it to the next stage of growth.

“It feels kind of like a mother sending her child off to college,” Binkley-Tow said. “It’s time to let go and allow a new chapter to begin — leaving room for new leadership and growth.”

Since its launch, the organization’s Flourishing Families program has served more than 2,000 families in Kent County, providing practical and emotional peer support for parents and advocating for awareness on perinatal mood disorders.

The nonprofit trains and matches volunteers with families, whom they visit regularly to provide companionship and assistance with responsibilities such as soothing newborns, preparing meals and performing light household tasks.

“One of my favorite things about this work has been getting to know the volunteers,” Walters said. “They are the center of MomsBloom. The idea of re-creating a village — that we all need each other — continues to be important today.

“Our program is strong, and I feel grateful for all who have contributed to our success. I am thankful to Sara for bringing me on this amazing adventure, and hope MomsBloom will continue to flourish for many years to come.”

An interim executive director would be expected to lead for much of 2018 before shifting control to a permanent, full-time executive director.
