A nonprofit focused on breast cancer has named a new executive director.

Grand Rapids-based Komen Michigan, or Komen MI, said this week it hired Erica Bills, who’s a previous Komen Michigan board member, for the role.

Chuck Christmas, Komen MI board president, said Bills will “strengthen Komen MI” and “develop strategic partnerships” with community members and organizations, which “help us eliminate the barriers preventing women from getting screened and treated for breast cancer.”

Bills said she’ll focus on reducing the number of breast cancer deaths in Michigan and bringing Komen MI programs to even more women in communities across the region.

Bills' background

Bills has over a decade of experience in the nonprofit sector, where she's served in leadership, fund development and strategic marketing roles.

She also has a proven track record in developing strategic relationships with "diverse groups of donors and increasing community partnerships."

Previously, Bills worked with Henry Ford Allegiance Health in the area of quality resource management and as executive director of the Muscular Dystrophy Association in Okemos.

She has also volunteered with the Rotary Club, Women Working Wonders, Jackson Symphony Orchestra, Habitat for Humanity and The Information Technology Empowerment Center.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in health sciences from Kalamazoo College and a master’s degree in public administration from Western Michigan University.

Komen MI

Komen Michigan served more than 85,000 women last year.

Over the last 20 years, Komen MI has funded $12 million in community breast health programs across 24 counties.
