A deadline is fast approaching for film students to win $1,000.

West Michigan high school and college students are urged to submit short films shot and edited on their mobile devices before 11:59 p.m. tomorrow for the third-annual Mosaic Mobile contest.

The contest is organized by The Mosaic Film Experience, a nonprofit that encourages young people to use digital media to tell their stories.

In the past, Skot Welch, the organization’s founder, said students tackled a variety of issues.

“We see many films that deal with the issues directly impacting student's lives — bullying, pressures from school and at home, things students are involved in, such as sports and environmental impact, and how technology affects their everyday lives,” Welch said.

“We also see themes that deal with the larger political and social climate locally and nationally — like why school is important, how students can have a say in their education and topics like Black Lives Matter.”

Submission criteria

Each video must be two to three minutes long. The video must tell a story surrounding the theme “tomorrow,” use letters and props and use the words “why not.” Any music or sounds in the video must have copyright permission or be royalty-free.

Students can submit up to two videos.

“We value films that take on a unique or interesting perspective,” Welch said.

He added that the competition “helps empower students to own their own narratives and expand the media landscape by adding their voice.”

The contest

A panel of experts comprised of local filmmakers, film directors, media professionals and educators will judge the films. The top-10 films will be announced on Oct. 25.

The first-place winner will be awarded $1,000, the second-place winner will be awarded $500 and the third-place winner will be awarded $250.

The public will also have a say in crowning a winner. In 24-hour span, the public will be able to vote for the Rick Wilson Student Choice Award between noon on Oct. 27 and noon on Oct. 28. The top two student choice winners will receive cash prizes and video production gear.

Mobile film festival

The contest's winners will be announced during The Mosaic Film Experience Festival at the Wealthy Theatre in Grand Rapids on Nov. 8 and 9, where the films may be shown.
