A statewide nonprofit focused on the professional growth of women will feature a national author, gender equality advocate and Marine Corps combat veteran at its annual dinner.

Inforum Michigan’s annual Capstone dinner will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, at the JW Marriott, at 235 Louis St. NW in Grand Rapids. The event will feature keynote speaker U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Kate Germano, co-author of “Fight Like a Girl: The Truth Behind How Female Marines are Trained,” with event moderation provided by Jennifer Pascua, community relations lead for Spectrum Health.

“We are ecstatic to welcome folks back to an in-person event for our West Michigan Capstone,” said Becky Puckett-Wood, Inforum vice president of corporate and member engagement. “Even better is having a respected veteran like Kate Germano speak to her work around sexism and systemic bias in the military and lessons it has for us all.”

Germano, a combat veteran who spent 20 years in the Marines, will speak on topics such as her advocacy against gender bias and high expectations for women in the military and discuss how these experiences can apply to women across industries. She earned national recognition after battling lower standards for women Marines, ultimately leading to her retirement in 2015. Germano’s book, co-written with Army veteran Kelly Kennedy, sheds light on these experiences.

“I am so honored to be a speaker at this year’s Inforum conference and am grateful that we can meet in person. Since its inception in 1962, Inforum has worked to connect, educate and inform women leaders to empower them and expand their opportunities,” Germano said. “I look forward to sharing my experiences and the significant lessons I learned as a woman Marine fighting against gender bias to help the attendees overcome barriers to equity and lead change successfully.”
