Varnum partner named to Girls on the Run board

A family law attorney recently joined a nonprofit’s leadership team. 

Erika Salerno Shadowens, a Varnum family law attorney, was appointed to the board of directors for Girls on the Run Greater Kalamazoo.

Shadowens has over 26 years of experience in her field and specializes in divorce, child custody and family law litigation. She also is a trained mediator and collaborative lawyer, serving clients in Kalamazoo, Kent, Allegan, Berrien, Van Buren, St. Joseph, Barry, Calhoun, Eaton, Ionia and surrounding counties. Shadowens has litigated cases in all levels of the court system including the Michigan Supreme Court.

In 2021 and 2022, Shadowens was named to the Best Lawyers in America Family Law list. Her other awards and recognitions include National Law Review Thought Leader Award (Family Law Practice Team) in 2020, Michigan Lawyers Weekly Women in the Law in 2014 and the Kalamazoo County Bar Association Vlachos Award in 2013. 

In addition to her work with Girls on the Run, Shadowens is a volunteer at the East Kentwood High School Marching Band and Red Storm Robotics Team. She also is an adjunct professor for Western Michigan University.

Shadowens holds an LL.M. degree in Health Care Law from Loyola University Chicago School of Law and a J.D. from Drake University Law School. She earned her undergraduate degree from Michigan State University.

Girls on the Run is a nonprofit that aims to teach critical life skills to girls of all abilities through interactive lessons and physical activity. The organization offers a variety of programs for girls in grades three through eight. The Greater Kalamazoo council was established in 2002.
