Orion lands veterans home work

Orion Construction, a local general contracting firm, has been chosen to renovate the main entrance to the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans at 3000 Monroe Ave. NE.

Work on the $1.1 million project involves modifying the main entrance by adding a new exterior vestibule and a steel-framed and canvas-covered canopy.

The canopy’s size will measure 7,000 square feet and it will provide a much-needed protective area at the entrance for residents and visitors.

The project also calls for 15,000 square feet of sidewalk, which will contain a built-in snowmelt system, and enhanced landscaping.

The Michigan Department of Military Affairs will supervise the work.

M.C. Smith Associates and Architectural Group of East Grand Rapids designed the project.

Orion Construction co-founder and principal John Boonstra, project manager John Shepherd and project superintendent Troy Kuiper are heading the work team. They expect that the work will be done in mid-October.
