An outdoor retailer is moving into downtown to test the Grand Rapids market.
Madison Heights-based Moosejaw Mountaineering will open a pop-up store in in Grand Rapids at Klingman Lofts, at 410 Ionia Ave. SW, on Sept. 19 to coincide with ArtPrize.
The store will be 4,000 square feet and connect to a High Altitude Lounge, where the company will host events and activities.
The store is a “pop-up-to-permanent” test, which allows Moosejaw to check out a new market with a short-term lease.
The store is expected to remain open through the winter, Moosejaw CEO Eoin Comerford said.
A similar pop-up store was opened in Detroit in 2012 and became a permanent location.
The Michigan company has considered opening a store in Grand Rapids for years, Moosejaw Director of Retail Nick Rau said.
“We looked at numerous locations in Grand Rapids and chose the Klingman Lofts, because it offered the perfect space for us to experiment with a new retail format, plus proximity to the highly trafficked Downtown Market,” Rau said.
Moosejaw is an outdoor retailer that sells jackets, clothing, footwear and equipment for water and winter sports, cycling, climbing, camping and hiking.
The company was founded in 1992 and has stores in Michigan, Colorado, Illinois and Missouri.
Klingman Lofts is across the street from the Downtown Market and will be the home of Craft Beer Cellar, a beer bar and retailer that’s planning to open this fall.
“We had a vision for what the market district could be, and we are now seeing it come to fruition, inside our building and beyond our walls,” said Mimi Fritz, president and CEO, Downtown Market. “Just like the Downtown Market, the market district can be an incubator for new ideas.”
