A local outdoor sports retailer is on the final phase of a three-phase renovation to make the two-story store easier to navigate for shoppers.

The renovation at Bill & Paul’s Sportshaus in Grand Rapids Township, at 1200 E. Paris Ave. SE, presents a “significant” change in customer service, Store Manager Jon Holmes said.

From its original construction in 1996, the building's presentation needed to be updated to accommodate customers.

“Over the course of 20 years, we learned a lot more about retail,” Holmes said. “The structure prevented us from accommodating our customers.”

The store’s owner, DP Fox Ventures, engaged with store staff and retail traffic-flow experts to make the store more welcoming, said Scott Gorsline, SVP, DP Fox Ventures.

“It is a cool-looking store,” Gorsline said. “We left a lot of the original woodwork, and it will still feel like Bill & Paul’s.”

The store has remained open with full product availability throughout the renovation.

Grand Rapids-based Integrated Architecture is the architect on the project.

Grand Rapids-based Triangle Associates is the project’s general contractor.

Three phases

Phase one took place from mid-March to early May and encompassed the entire clothing department on the second floor.

Phase two, which was just recently completed, was for the seasonal section of the first floor.

Construction crews are also taking out a section of wall on the first floor that previously separated the camping and seasonal sections and forced shoppers into a dead end. Now shoppers will be able to circle the entire first floor.

“People will be able to shop more comfortably, wander through the store more efficiently,” Holmes said.

Phase three recently began, and Holmes expects it to be finished by mid-September.

The build out will add about 500 square feet to the store’s 10,000-square-foot profile. The biggest difference, Holmes said, will be removing the main registers from the center of the store to the side. The reconfiguration will enable staff to cash people out more efficiently and also add space to the sales floor.

Other minor upgrades to the store include better product displays, lighting and the removal of the dropped ceilings to make the interior feel more spacious.

Bill & Paul’s Sporthaus

Bill & Paul’s Sporthaus opened in 1961.

It came under new ownership two years ago. DP Fox Ventures, which owns various holdings in sports, automotive, fashion and real estate, acquired the store in 2016 from former owners Eric Pearson and Kim Pearson.

The store sells a variety of outdoor equipment, apparel and footwear for snow sports, paddle sports, hiking and camping.
