A food distributor in the area and a poultry business teamed up to donate more than 10,000 pounds of chicken to two local Michigan food banks across the state this holiday season.

Byron Center-based SpartanNash and Orland, Indiana-based Miller Poultry donated 6,500 pounds of chicken last month to Access of West Michigan and its network of local food banks. The two companies then donated 4,000 pounds of chicken this month to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan.

Lauren DeVol, corporate affairs writer at SpartanNash, said every year, Miller Poultry, which is a family owned business and one of the company’s vendors, asks it to facilitate donations in the communities they serve together.

“Miller Poultry provides the donated chicken, and SpartanNash helps to transport and store the chicken, as well as arrange the logistics of the donations at our retail stores,” DeVol said.

Galen Miller, owner and CEO of Miller Poultry, said its annual donation is an “important initiative” for Miller Poultry, and it is “proud” to work with SpartanNash.

In 2016, Miller Poultry will donate 175,000 pounds of chicken to food pantries in Indiana, Ohio and Michigan.

DeVol said SpartanNash has long-standing relationships with both Access of West Michigan and the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan.
