A long-time business owner and a local chef have opened a “modern” Mediterranean restaurant in Grand Rapids.

Matt Overdevest and Kameel Chamelly, co-founders of Culinary Partners, opened Marcona on Lyon last month in the city’s Midtown neighborhood, at 623 Lyon St. NE.

It is situated in the same block as Chamelly’s other businesses, Martha’s Vineyard, Martha’s Pizza, Nantucket Baking Co. and Lyon Street Café.

Overdevest is the executive chef.

Marcona refers to a type of gourmet Spanish almond popular in Mediterranean dishes.

The partners said the restaurant focuses on the cuisine of countries that border the entire Mediterranean Sea.

It serves lunch and dinner, as well as beer, wine and cocktails.

The menu features a range of items: “staple dips,” such as hummus and baba ganoush; mezze plate appetizers; small plates; salads; a skewer list with custom sausages from Louise Earl Butcher, chicken, beef and seasonal sauces; and large entrées.

The restaurant bills itself as “very vegetarian- and vegan-friendly.”

Its hours are from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday.
