A trio of partners are planning to open a restaurant in town that serves “eclectic comfort food” and has a rooftop deck.
Owner-operator Craig Jones and Zan Lamkin and Phil Rienstra, investor-owners, said today they plan to open The Friesian Gastro Pub later this year in the long-vacant Lord’s Chapel just east of Medical Mile, at 720 Michigan St. NE.
“We chose this location for a reason,” Rienstra said. “There are so many people living and working within walking distance of The Friesian, so we want to create an approachable gastropub that can be part of their weekly dining and social experience.”
The gastropub’s name — Friesian is a Dutch horse breed — is a nod to Lamkin and Rienstra’s Dutch heritage. The partners said the gastropub may have a Dutch item or two on the menu, but it won’t be a Dutch-themed establishment.
“The Friesian Gastro Pub aims to create a casual, neighborhood vibe with a full selection of drink offerings, while providing an eclectic twist on comfort food,” Jones said. “We intend to change the menu regularly, with some globally inspired selections, but not stray too far from what you’d expect in a neighborhood gastropub.”
The 2,800-square-foot, one-story building is undergoing interior and exterior renovations to create seating space for 88 people inside, including a bar that will be in the center of the dining space, as well as a 20-person patio behind the building.
The Friesian is also finalizing plans to have a 50-person rooftop deck.
The venue will host live entertainment events throughout the year.
The owners are seeking a liquor license and expect to have state approval in the coming months.
