A pair of partners are hosting a conference on ethics in genomic medicine next week.

The 2018 West Michigan Medical Ethics Conference will be from 1-5 p.m. on March 26 at the Grand Valley State University Eberhard Center in Grand Rapids, at 301 Fulton St. W.

The event is being coordinated by the GVSU Office of the Vice Provost for Health and Spectrum Health and supported by the GVSU Philosophy Department.

The conference’s objectives are to understand ethical dilemmas that arise in medical practice and research, recognize the importance of ethical challenges and use the tools provided during the conference to resolve complex ethical issues.

Presentations will include an introduction to genomic medicine and its implications and an examination of the ethical issues faced by providers.

Speakers during the conference will include Bart Williams of the Van Andel Research Institute, Deborah Barnbaum of Kent State University, Kim Garchar of Kent State University and Ruth Sanborn of Spectrum Health.

There will also be a panel discussion of specific clinical cases, facilitated by Caleb Bupp of Spectrum Health.

Panelists include Williams, Barnbaum, Garchar, Alta Charo of the University of Wisconsin Law School and Matthew Porteus of Stanford University.
