Perrigo donates $275K in support of Allegan

Perrigo Co. is giving its hometown of Allegan an early Christmas present.

Perrigo Company Charitable Foundation announced a donation of $275,000 to be divided between the city of Allegan and five local organizations as part of the global health care supplier’s 125th anniversary celebration.

“Perrigo is strongly committed to West Michigan,” said Perrigo Chairman and CEO Joe Papa. “We hope that gifts, given as we wrap up our 125th anniversary celebration, continue to strengthen organizations that make Allegan County such an exceptional place for Perrigo to grow and prosper.”

According to a statement from the company, the donation will be divided in the following manner:

  • City of Allegan, $125,375: Funding will be used toward park and recreational improvements, fire department education programs and equipment needs, and police department technology equipment and protective gear.
  • Wings of Hope Hospice, $42,000: Funding will help support pain and symptom management, transition and grief support programs, all of which help patients and families manage end-of-life care and the loss of loved ones. The donation also will support the supply needs for Wings Home, which is transitioning to management by Wings of Hope.
  • Allegan General Hospital Foundation Pelvic Wellness Center, $29,500: Funding will be used to help establish a new Pelvic Wellness Center focused on enhancing and merging existing hospital and clinical services related to this underserved area of women’s health.
  • Renewed Hope Free Health Clinic, $25,000: Funding will help the organization migrate from paper-based to systems-enabled patient charting as well as purchase durable and disposable medical supplies.
  • Volunteer Medical Corps, $28,500: Funding will allow the Free Health Care Clinic, which currently is open one day per month, to be open one day each week for the next year. The clinic provides free medical, dental and mental health services to uninsured and underinsured residents of Allegan County.
  • Allegan County Resource Development Committee, $25,000: Funding will allow the ACRDC to make some much needed building repairs and upgrades. The organization provides Headstart and Early Headstart education programs, weatherization and food assistance programs to low income households, as well as assistance programs for seniors and people with disabilities in Allegan County.

Arthur Shannon, vice president of investor relations and global communications at Perrigo, said the charity money comes from Perrigo to support programs that strengthen the communities in which the company does business.

The organizations were selected by the Perrigo Foundation’s board based on their years of cooperation in the Allegan community and that Perrigo employees support these programs through volunteerism and personal donations.

“These gifts, like others provided by the Perrigo Company Charitable Foundation, reflect our ongoing partnership with a variety of organizations that make our community a better place to live and work,” Shannon said. “A vibrant, healthy community is vital to Perrigo’s long-term success.”
