A local pet foundation is spearheading a statewide adoption event tomorrow.

Grand Rapids-based BISSELL Pet Foundation, or BPF, will pay adoption fees at more than 75 Michigan shelters and rescue organizations during its Empty the Shelters event.

Hundreds of pets are expected to be available for adoption at participating organizations.

Those who adopt during the Oct. 14 event will be required to pay licensing fees, and costs may vary by county. BPF will provide a leash for dogs, a collar for cats, wellness information and coupons.

Participating organizations will adhere to their standard adoption requirements for the event, and adopters are encouraged to review those requirements. A list of participating organizations and more information can be found on the BPF website.

More than 9,000 cats and dogs have been adopted at other Empty the Shelters events in the U.S. in the past 17 months.

“Michigan has served as a model for Empty The Shelters,” said Cathy Bissell, founder, BISSELL Pet Foundation. “Shelters in other states are seeing what we can accomplish, and we have been fortunate to hold this event in nine states this year. We are hoping to expand our efforts into more areas of the country, but we can’t do this without the help of our generous supporters.”
