A local pizzeria has been named the best in the state by a restaurant association.
Flo’s Pizzeria Ristorante in Grand Rapids won the inaugural Michigan Restaurant Association, or MRA, Pizza Challenge at the annual Michigan Restaurant Show last month.
The win allows Flo’s entry to the International Pizza Challenge, presented by Pizza Today, in March in Las Vegas.
“Michigan definitely knows its pizza,” said Justin Winslow, interim president and CEO, MRA. “Several large pizza franchises are based here — including Domino’s, Little Caesars, Buddy’s, Hungry Howies and Jet’s. Add in the countless local pizzerias that are landmarks in their own communities, and you have a recipe for pizza greatness.”
The competition was head-to-head, tournament style, with participating restaurants choosing to bake their pizzas on a conveyor or in a deck oven.
A panel of judges was made up of a chef-instructor, food critic, wine expert and hospitality consultant.
Flo’s entered its Signature Pizza, which is topped with pepperoni, spicy capicola, ham, sausage, meatballs and bacon. The pizza base is a thick crust, brushed with garlic and parmesan.
“It has been our goal to be the best since day one,” said Dan and Davide Uccello, Flo’s owners, in a statement. “This is why our slogan has always been, ‘You’ve tried the rest . . . now eat the best.'
“This award confirms our team’s hard work.”
