A well-known gas station and convenience store brand is making inroads in West Michigan.
The first Michigan Kum & Go is set to open Thursday, Jan. 19, at 2134 Alpine Ave. NW. The family-owned retail chain based in Des Moines, Iowa, plans to expand its Michigan and Grand Rapids market in the coming years, including later this month with another location at 5437 S. Division Ave.
There are also two Grandville locations under development.
“We’re excited to bring our fresh perspective to the convenience industry to the people of Grand Rapids, both in the jobs we create and the healthier products we offer,” said Kum & Go CEO Tanner Krause. “The more we’ve learned about Michigan, the more excited we are to invest here.”
Kum & Go has more than 400 stores in 13 states. Besides its Michigan expansion efforts, Kum & Go is also making inroads into Utah with its first Salt Lake City store last year and Boise, Idaho, later this year. Detroit is on the agenda for 2024.
The Michigan expansion was announced in the summer of 2021. The convenience store brand could open more than 50 stores in the state in the next few years, according to NACS Magazine.
The Michigan opening will be celebrated with a grand opening event 10 a.m.- 12 p.m. Jan. 30 at the Division Avenue location and will include merchandise giveaways, as well as vendors on site with giveaways and samplings.
Along with gas, Kum & Go offers a fresh, made-to-order food program, including stackers and bowls, as well as grab-and-go burritos.
Kum & Go prides itself on three pillars of business: people, philanthropy and planet. To start its partnerships in Michigan, the company partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Kent County, sponsoring a home in the Baxter neighborhood.
Since its founding in 1959, Kum & Go has shared 10% of its profits back to the communities it serves.
The company is hiring across all of its Grand Rapids stores, offering part- and full-time positions starting at $15 an hour.
