A metal and plastic recycling company is planning a $10.1-million expansion.

Kalamazoo-based Schupan & Sons is adding 40,000 square feet and 50 employees to its aluminum and plastic sales division, at 4200 Davis Creek Ct. in Kalamazoo, as well as expanding its electronics recycling division and adding 30 employees, at 1949 Wynn Rd. in Kalamazoo, according to the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, or MEDC, last week.

Both projects will increase the existing manufacturing capacities and add office space.

The sales building plan also includes landscaping and site improvements to the parking areas and construction of a storm water management system, according to the City of Kalamazoo.

The company purchased the adjacent parcel between Davis Creek Court and Kilgore Road from the Kalamazoo Brownfield Redevelopment Authority for $10,000, which it will use in storm water management plans.

Michigan was chosen for the expansion over competing sites in Indiana and Ohio, the MEDC said.

MEDC awarded the company a $500,000 Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant for the projects.
