The outdoor retailer REI is jumping into the action happening around Woodland Mall.

Seattle-based REI Co-op said today it will open a new 20,000-square-foot store next spring just south of the mall in Kentwood, at 3149 28th St. SE.

It will be the company’s first store in West Michigan and fourth in the state. The retailer also has locations in Ann Arbor, Northville and Troy.

The company plans to hire 40 employees for the store.

“This new location will allow us to connect nearly 10,000 active REI members in Grand Rapids to the many outdoor activities this region has to offer,” said Michelle Yancy, Midwest retail director, REI.

REI Grand Rapids will carry gear for most popular outdoor activities in the area, such as paddling, biking and running.

REI described Grand Rapids as “western Michigan’s hub for outdoor recreation” because of its proximity to the Grand River, Lake Michigan and the Huron-Manistee National Forests.

REI has 152 stores and over 17-million members nationwide.
