BATTLE CREEK — The state has revoked the mortuary science licenses of a southern Michigan funeral home and its manager for failing to deposit prepaid funeral funds with an escrow agent.
Royal Funeral Home in Battle Creek and Richard L. Royal are named in a complaint by Michigan’s Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.
As of Jan. 31, 2019, more than $269,000 for prepaid funeral services on 92 contracts had not been placed in escrow or trusts, according to the complaint. Services were provided for 20 of the contracts.
About $78,000 toward more than $194,000 in ordered restitution was not paid, the state said.
A telephone number listed for the funeral home has been disconnected.
The Battle Creek Enquirer reported that the funeral home closed in May 2019 during the state’s investigation.
