A local retailer has partnered with Olympia Entertainment on the future home of the Red Wings.

Grand Rapids-based Meijer was announced yesterday as one of the first two official Landmark-level partners, or sponsors, at the Detroit Events Center, the new arena complex in downtown Detroit.

Saint Joseph Mercy Health System, which is part of Trinity Health and serves southeast Michigan, was announced as the other partner.

The contracts begin with the 2017-18 season and assure the companies “maximum visibility” throughout the center.

The $627 million, 20,000-seat arena is expected to open in September 2017. It will be part of The District Detroit, an entertainment district.

"We couldn't be more excited to be a part of Detroit's great comeback story,” said Cathy Cooper, senior director of community partnerships, Meijer. “After opening two Meijer stores in the city recently, we see this as another excellent way to support Detroit. We are so pleased to be a part of what will be a fantastic venue to watch a game or enjoy a concert."

Both partnerships will allow the companies to offer community initiatives to visitors at the Detroit Events Center, whether there for a hockey game or concert.

Meijer is working on how to host an interactive children’s’ area, free summer hockey clinics and Red Wings player appearances at stores.

Saint Joseph Mercy Health System, which includes five hospitals on the state’s east side, will continue its Healthy Hockeytown program, including events such as 5K runs and its Healthy Choice program, which allows fans healthier food options during events at Joe Louis Arena.

"We are thrilled to have Meijer and Saint Joseph Mercy Health System as our first official, long-term partners," said Tom Wilson, president and CEO, Olympia Entertainment. "These companies believe in the city and The District Detroit and recognize that the Detroit Events Center is going to be the district's crown jewel. Both companies are focused on bringing unique experiences to fans and visitors and are names we are very proud to have associated with the new Detroit Events Center."
