A senior living community in the area has broken ground on a $2.3-million renovation project.
Sunset Retirement Communities and Services is working on The Manor & Villages campus in Jenison, at 725 Baldwin St.
Construction should be completed in August.
Holland-based Elzinga & Volkers is the contractor on the project.
The 400-resident community will receive a façade update — including the removal and re-building of the drive-through canopy at the entrance facing Baldwin Street, an expansion of its Reflections memory care facility, updates to the campus’ three kitchens and a series of energy-efficiency updates.
Sunset is installing new heating and cooling systems, as well as upgrading all 260 windows to energy-efficient models.
The project also includes the construction of five additional residences for Reflections.
The expansion of the Reflections program is in direct response to the rapidly growing need for memory care in West Michigan.
By 2025, over 6,000 adults with dementia in Kent and Ottawa counties will require assistance with care in either an assisted living or nursing home, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. Current capacity in both counties is for 440 people.
