Sable Homes is a busy builder.
John Bitely, president of the Rockford-based residential development firm, recently announced a new construction project planned for the Village of Sparta. He said construction will get underway late this month on Central Town Square, a 20-home development Sable will build near the intersection of North State and East Division in Sparta’s downtown district.
In addition to the single-family homes his firm will put up, Bitely said the project will include a new model and housing design center he hopes will help continue the economic growth Sparta is undergoing.
“Recently, Sparta has seen substantial growth in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors. We want to help stimulate this growth by bringing families downtown and boosting the village economy,” said Bitely.
“We value infill in the village to achieve greater economies of scale for our services and in the end save taxpayers money,” said Martin Super, village manager
The Village of Sparta bought the 4.5-acre site about four years ago from Sparta Area Schools and sold it to Sable for $120,000.
“It’s a testament to our progress that Sable is investing here by building 20 new, quality homes right in downtown. This project will help facilitate our continued growth,” said Super.
Central Town Square isn’t the only development Sable is building, and the Village of Sparta isn’t the only municipality in which it is working.
Sable also is developing Stone Crest in Courtland Township, near downtown Rockford at 11 Mile Road and Young Street. Stone Crest is going up on the site of an unfinished and foreclosed development. It will offer 30 additional homes once work is completed. Bitely has priced the Stone Crest homes from $180,000 to $260,000.
“We’re excited that Sable Homes came in and picked up where the Stone Crest development project had stalled a few years back,” said Chuck Porter, supervisor of Courtland Township.
Sable Homes also is building Scotsmoor II in Caledonia, a new community of 51 homes. Prices are expected to begin at $164,500 for a three-bedroom, two-bath house with nearly 2,000 square feet of space.
Bitely said the Sparta development got its name from postings on Facebook and Twitter, where followers offered suggestions for names. Central Town Square was chosen because the development is being built on the site that once was home to Sparta Central School. Bitely said other suggestions included Academy Square, Sable Central, Old School Center and Central Square.
“By involving the community in the naming of this property, we’re able to help ensure this development reflects their spirit,” he said.
“We encouraged the community to suggest names that tied back into the former school as a way to preserve its memory and harken back to a place that played a profound role in the lives of many residents,” he added.
Sable will get Central Town Square going by building three homes. The remaining 17 will be built at the pace that homes sell. The houses are expected to be priced from $100,000 to $150,000.
