A senior living organization is planning to build a $36-million community on an existing campus in the area.
Clark Retirement Community is building the 170,000-square-foot expansion at its existing Keller Lake campus in Kentwood, at 2499 Forest Hill Ave. SE.
There are about 110 independent living residents there now on a piece of the 25-acre developable portion of the 40-acre campus.
The current campus consists mostly of just residences, and the new developments will create more of a community atmosphere, said Brian Pangle, CEO of Clark Retirement.
Set to begin next spring, the community will be built as a “town square model,” with open areas, walking paths, a restaurant, bistro, piazza and other common spaces and amenities.
The project includes 70 new independent living apartments in four connected multi-story buildings, as well as underground parking.
Pangle said the new developments will provide space for an additional 110 residents.
“We’re seeing increased demand for independent senior living and more focus on services and amenities that support active lifestyles, socialization, wellness programs and community events,” Pangle said. “That’s why we’re expanding and adapting our flagship neighborhood location right here in Grand Rapids.”
Pangle said the organization will likely add 10 to 15 jobs full-time jobs in areas such as dining, maintenance, support and administration. The campus’s director is Nancy Ayers.
Firms participating on the project include Holland-based Elzinga & Volkers for construction, Progressive AE for architecture and interior design and Huntington for financing.
The organization also worked with real estate consulting firm Plante Moran Cresa, and the Richmond, Virginia-based investment bank BB&T.
