A local shopping center is making room for two fashion retailers already familiar with the area.
Breton Village in Grand Rapids said yesterday that Vancouver, Canada-based lululemon Athletica, an athletic clothing store, and Edina, Minn.-based Hot Mama, a mom-themed clothing store, are coming to the property, at 1830 Breton Rd. SE
Lululemon Athletica and Hot Mama should be able to open by Dec. 1.
The stores will join other retailers at the village: Leigh’s, Anthropologie, Ann Taylor LOFT, JB and Me, Fitzgeralds, D&W Fresh Market and more.
The pair will help establish Breton Village as a fashion destination, said Scott Wierda, managing partner, CWD Real Estate Investment in Grand Rapids.
Breton Village is surrounded by “tremendous demographics,” Wierda said.
“When you start getting into who’s there, you have higher education levels, higher incomes levels and, frankly, it's diverse,” Wierda said.
With Leigh’s and Anthropologie as anchors, fashion retailers are now being attracted to the shopping center, Wierda said.
“When you look at the marketplace across the country, there’s a lot of shopping centers on major streets led by the regional malls and the discounter category,” Wierda said.
He added that in each market there also tends to be an area that has a boutique shopping location, which “Grand Rapids has never really defined very well.”
“Over the last 10 years, Breton Village has emerged as that space,” Wierda said.
Lululemon, founded in 1998, and Hot Mama, founded in 2004, will be moving into Breton Village’s fourth and final planned build-out space, a one story, 24,500-square-foot building, at the corner of Breton Road and Burton Street.
Lululemon’s space will be 3,000 square feet, and Hot Mama’s space will be 3,700 square feet, leaving enough room in the building for five to eight more retailers, Weirda said.
CWD is in discussions with a number of retailers to fill up the space by mid 2015.
Work on the building has already begun.
The building will feature terra cotta sliding accents and a multi-use outside plaza, where lululemon plans to host yoga classes and workshops.
Moving across town
The Breton Village openings mean both retailers are leaving Gaslight Village in East Grand Rapids.
Hot Mama, which has stores in Ann Arbor, Rochester Hills and Birmingham, has been in West Michigan for seven years, operating a store at 2249 Wealthy St. SE.
The move is due, in part, to Hot Mama’s plans to expand its local footprint by about 40 percent at the Breton Village space, Weirda said.
Lululemon, which has stores in Ann Arbor, Birmingham and Troy, has had a showroom in Gaslight Village for two years, at 2213 Wealthy St. SE.
The Breton Village space will mark lululemon’s first official West Michigan store, said Nina Garner, a spokesperson for lululemon.
“This new location is ideal for lululemon and our desire to provide athletic apparel and host in-store events, workshops and yoga classes,” Garner said. “This Grand Rapids opening is pretty near and dear to my heart, because I think Grand Rapids is the coolest community . . . Active yoga is taking off in Grand Rapids.”
