An area shopping center is getting a new anchor.
Kentwood Centre near the intersection of Eastern Avenue and 52nd Street SE has secured a Planet Fitness to occupy 39,000 square feet of the 78,000-square-foot shopping center, according to Frank Reimus, associate advisor for Silveri Co.
The center has been mostly empty since the space was vacated by Family Fare a few years ago. Reimus said the new tenant will bring traffic other retailers are looking for and expects the center to fill up quickly, with several negotiations already occurring.
The Planet Fitness will be one of the largest of the company’s locations in Michigan, which includes three others in the Grand Rapids area. It will open in April, with $10 memberships and 24/7 operating hours.
“Planet Fitness is very interested in continuing to develop the Grand Rapids market,” Reimus said. “It’s a nice area and it reaches a lot of the demographics they’re looking for.”
The Kentwood Centre is at the center of a three-mile radius with a population of 83,610 with a median age of 33 and an average income of $53,167, according to Reimus. The intersection sees more than 40,000 cars a day.
Reimus said those demographics work well for many other national retailers that will look at the space now that there’s an anchor.
Currently, the center is home to a Dollar General and a Hungry Howie’s Pizza. It’s also near Kentwood’s Fire Station No. 3, a Burger King, KFC, 52nd Street Car Wash and Java Cone.
There are nine retail spaces in the two-building shopping center, with space ranging from 459 square feet to 18,509 square feet and lease rates ranging from $459 a month to $4,237 a month.
