A local organization is hosting an online summit this weekend on economic equity in the African American community.
Grand Rapids Area Black Businesses (GRABB), in partnership with Verizon, Mercantile Bank, Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. Blue Cross Blue Shield, Old National Bank, United Bank, Choice One Bank, and the city of Grand Rapids, will host The Shift Summit from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday streamed on the Hopin platform instead of in-person due to COVID-19.
Tickets to the annual event, $50, are available online.
According to GRABB, “The Shift Summit is an annual gathering to connect, engage and inform Black entrepreneurs, creatives, small business owners, professionals and stakeholders about opportunities, resources and programs in the entrepreneurial ecosystem that will foster economic empowerment and equity.”
The Shift Summit will include panel discussions, workshops and networking with “entrepreneurs, influencers, doers, creatives and other tri-sector leaders (social, public and private).”
Perry is a fellow in the Metropolitan Policy Program at the Brookings Institution, a scholar-in-residence at American University and a columnist for The Hechinger Report, an independent nonprofit newsroom that covers inequality and innovation in education. Perry is author of the new book, “Know Your Price: Valuing Black Lives and Property in America’s Black Cities” (Brookings Institution Press, May 2020), which is available wherever books are sold.
Smith is an entrepreneur and the creator of Buy the Block, one of the only Black-owned crowdfunding platforms that is helping Black communities build wealth while determining the direction of development in their communities.
