Fortune and Great Place to Work have included Michigan Software Labs on the 2020 ranking of the “100 Best Small Workplaces” in the country.

Ada-based Michigan Software Labs ranked No. 64 out of 100 and was the only Michigan company on the list, which was published Friday on the Fortune and Great Place to Work websites.

Michigan Software Labs develops custom mobile, web and internet of things (IoT) software for clients ranging from locally owned businesses to Fortune 500 companies.

“Our goal starting Michigan Software Labs was to create a team where great people would feel fulfilled creating software that positively influences the world around us,” said Josh Hulst, co-founder and managing partner of Michigan Software Labs. “It’s always been ‘people first’ for us, and we’re grateful for this award that validates we’re doing a lot of things right.”

The rankings were determined by an independent, anonymous survey of 52,000 employees from hundreds of companies conducted by Great Place to Work and Fortune.

The survey asked questions about levels of trust, pride and camaraderie at work. Great Place to Work reviewed the survey results to determine the rankings.

Among the findings from the study: Trust fuels business performance. For example, the companies on the Best Small Workplaces and Best Medium Workplaces lists saw about three times the revenue growth of their peers as they provided positive experiences for employees.

“There’s a generosity of spirit that infuses the Best Small and Medium workplaces — one that has a measurable return,” said Kim Peters, executive vice president of Great Place to Work. “Whether it’s funding employee ‘passion projects’ or giving surprise gifts to customers, the best workplaces give it away, and they get it back in the form of inspired people who innovate harder and generate higher revenue.”

The Best Small Workplaces and Best Medium Workplaces lists are part of a series of rankings by Great Place to Work and Fortune based on employee survey feedback from Great Place to Work-certified organizations.
