The ex-police chief of a community in the region has been charged with embezzlement.

The office of Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette said 62-year-old Robert Wilson was arraigned last week in Oceana County in connection with salvage vehicle inspections. Wilson is also charged with five counts of filing a false certification.

A vehicle with a salvage title cannot receive a license plate or be used on public roads until it is re-certified. Inspections by state law enforcement officers can cost up to $100.

Schuette's office said Village of Shelby officials were not informed that Wilson was collecting inspection fees. Shelby is northwest of Grand Rapids.

Wilson was terminated as police chief.

His next court appearance is on Aug. 22.
