A local association of subcontractors has picked the year’s best general contractor.

Holland-based Elzinga & Volkers was named Michigan Contractor of the Year, or MCOY, at the seventh-annual American Subcontractors Association of Michigan, or ASAM, MCOY Awards ceremony on Thursday night at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids.

Elzinga & Volkers also won the award in 2012-2013.

Runners-up

Ada-based Dan Vos Construction Company, a three-time winner, was the first runner-up.

Grand Rapids-based Owen-Ames-Kimball, a two-time winner, was the second runner-up.

Finalists

Several firms were finalists for this year’s MCOY award: The Christman Company, Dan Vos Construction Company, Elzinga & Volkers, Erhardt Construction, First Companies, Owen-Ames-Kimball, Pioneer Construction and Rockford Construction.

“Behind every job site, there is a team of construction professionals working diligently to maintain the highest standards,” said Matt Fennema, ASAM president, when the nominees were announced in August. “These nominees are intentional in their success, and they’re raising the bar for the entire industry.”

Member vote

MCOY nominations were submitted in June by members of Grand Rapids-based ASAM.

The votes were tallied, and finalists were announced in August.

ASAM members considered numerous factors in voting for the winner: bid ethics and practice; job-site supervision; safety; communication; schedule coordination; project relations; lien processes; administrative procedures; payment terms; and workmanship.
