This year’s Michigan Contractor of the Year completed a hat trick.
At the sixth-annual American Subcontractors Association of Michigan, or ASAM, award ceremony last night in Grand Rapids at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, Dan Vos Construction Company was named the Michigan Contractor of the Year, or MCOY, for a third time.
“The MCOY Awards enable ASAM membership to salute general contractors or construction managers who exhibit best practices, professionalism and collaboration with Michigan’s subcontracting community,” according to the program.
Ada-based Dan Vos also won the inaugural event in 2010-11 and again in 2013-14.
Firm President Dan Vos said it’s his team that makes the regular appearance at the awards ceremony a possibility.
“My dad always said we are in the people business, not the construction business,” Vos said. “MCOY is all about the people, and we treat people how we want to be treated.
“It’s a validation for us.”
Owen-Ames-Kimball, last year’s winner and a two-time honoree, was the first runner-up.
“Two words: honor and relief,” said Frank Stanek, president, O-A-K. “It’s nice to be recognized. It lets us know we are doing things right.
“Second, this award means a lot, and the bar is raised each and every year.”
Elzinga & Volkers in Holland, which won the MCOY in 2012-13, was the second runner-up.
A humorous video featuring ASAM president and Windemuller Electric CFO Steve Alles and ASAM vice president and Kent Companies project manager Matt Fennema introduced the eight nominees.
The other nominees were The Christman Company, Erhardt Construction, Pioneer Construction, Rockford Construction and Triangle Associates.
Nominations for the MCOY Award were accepted in June.
Members of the American Subcontractors Association of Michigan then cast their votes, which were tabulated by the accounting firm Beene Garter.
The candidates were evaluated in a number of categories: bid ethics and practice; safety; job site supervision; communication; schedule coordination; project relations; lien processes; administrative procedures; payment terms; and quality workmanship.
