Grand Rapids Police Chief David Rahinsky is expected to brainstorm with other law enforcement leaders and White House senior administration officials on ways to enhance public trust and confidence in the justice system while maintaining public safety.

The police department says the White House 21st Century Policing Briefing is scheduled Thursday, June 30, in Washington.

Rahinsky intends to suggest a national recruitment initiative that would encourage young men and women of diverse backgrounds to consider careers in law enforcement. The initiative would be funded by the Justice Department.

Rahinsky says “agencies have been trying, with very limited success, to build departments that mirror the communities they serve” and that “a national recruitment program … could be a game changer.”
