The board for The Rapid has unanimously approved a ballot item that would extend the public transportation system’s funding for 12 years.

The Interurban Transit Partnership, or The Rapid, said last week its board voted to place a millage renewal proposal on the 2017 ballot in November, continuing the current rate of 1.47 mills into the future.

The mill rate would not change with approval, which would see an owner of a $100,000 home with a taxable value of $50,000 pay roughly $73.50 per year in their local property tax for the next 12 years.

The measure will be voted on by residents in Grand Rapids, East Grand Rapids, Grandville, Kentwood, Walker and Wyoming.

Voters can decide on the millage on Election Day, Nov. 7, or by obtaining an absentee ballot from their local government office and submitting it prior to Nov. 6.

The Rapid provides about 12-million rides annually or an average of nearly 1-million rides each month.
