Universal Forest Products has acquired a maker of wood crates and containers for industrial applications and the moving-and-storage industry.
Grand Rapids-based Universal Forest Products — which provides capital, management and administrative resources to wood-product subsidiaries — said today that its Industrial Wood Industries subsidiary has acquired Container Systems, Inc. in Franklinton, N.C.
Container Systems, which is family owned, reported sales in 2013 of about $3 million.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Container Systems makes wood moving-and-storage crates, specialized crates for niche markets and integrated packaging and is a wholesale custom panel and lumber supplier to the region’s industrial buyers.
East Coast market
The acquisition provides a presence in the East for Industrial Wood Industries, which supplies bulk shipping and storage bins, moving boxes, fruit and nut bins and other specialized wood products to industrial and agricultural customers, primarily in the West.
Universal Forest said that Industrial Wood Industries shares many customers with Container Systems. The deal will give Industrial Wood Industries an opportunity to serve new clients and enhance service to existing clients with locations nationwide.
“This acquisition is a perfect complement to IWI’s business and allows that affiliate to bring its strong capabilities and solutions to the Eastern Seaboard,” said Universal Forest Products CEO Matthew J. Missad. “Container Systems, Inc. is known as a quality panel products manufacturing company in its market.”
He added that Universal Forest’s industrial business is a primary focus for growth opportunities.
Container Systems joint owner Scott Parsons will remain as plant manager of the Franklinton operations, and employees Lyle Davis and James Boswell will serve as operations manager and account manager.
“This is an exciting new chapter for the people and customers of CSI, and we’re proud to now be a part of a respected international manufacturer and supplier,” Parsons said.
