A university in the region has a new executive with decades of experience.
Ferris State University hired Jim Bachmeier as its vice president for administration and finance, effective July 22, according to Ferris this week.
He is replacing Jerry Scoby, who retired last month.
Bachmeier will act as chief financial officer of Ferris, a member of the president’s executive team and treasurer of The Ferris Foundation.
Multiple departments will report to him, including athletics, finance, human resources, information technology, planning and public safety.
Bachmeier is a certified public accountant with 30 years of experience in higher education.
Most recently, Bachmeier has served as associate VP for strategic initiatives at Grand Valley State University since 2016.
He joined GVSU in 1995 as assistant VP for business and finance. He was promoted to associate VP of the department in 2004 and to VP in 2006.
While at GVSU, Bachmeier “significantly increased” housing capacity, improved the credit rating from A to A+, managed an endowment of more than $100 million, led a budget process through two recessions and a decline in statewide population and achieved “unprecedented athletic program success.”
Previously, Bachmeier was VP for finance and administration at Western Nebraska Community College.
He is serving or has served on numerous boards: the SmartZone Local Development Financing Authority; Grand Rapids Chamber; Lakeshore Advantage; Disability Network Lakeshore; Greater Ottawa County United Way; and West Michigan Strategic Alliance.
He holds a B.S. in business administration from Black Hills State University and an M.B.A. from Chadron State College.
