Urban chocolate shop expanding space

A two-year-old chocolate shop in Grand Rapids is doubling its size to add dining and events space.

Mokaya, at 638 Wealthy St. SE, is adding to its current lease and expanding into a 1,200-square-foot space next door.

The expansion is expected to be completed in August.

Mokaya is owned by the Golczynski family, Charles and Tamara and their son, Max. They have two employees.

The shop makes handcrafted artisan chocolate and confections, such as truffles, pastries and desserts, and offers hot and cold beverages — along with a chocolate-themed beer flight featuring drinks from local breweries.

The retail side of the operation will continue as usual. Half of the new space will be dedicated to production and the other half to events and dine-in seating for customers, who will be able to order plated desserts from a menu.

Max Golczynski, general manager, said the need for the expansion became apparent during the busy holiday rush last year.

“All of last December, we would make a round at night and sell out in a couple hours the next day,” he said.

The expansion will also allow Mokaya to host public events, on top of the private and corporate events it has already been hosting.

Max Golczynski said the events will include “five-course dinners, showers and birthday parties, bon-bon classes and pairings with breweries and spirits companies.”

He said the family also plans to add e-commerce to Mokaya’s website this fall and debut a “savory” lunch menu at a future date.

Firm on the project

Grand Rapids-based Becker & Sanders is the project’s architect and contractor.

The Golczynskis are handling the interior design.
