Set, cast, produced and filmed in Grand Rapids, the indie film “The Fly” will premiere downtown on Friday.

The 45-minute film, which stars Atlanta-based rapper and Grand Rapids native Willie the Kid, will be shown this Friday at St. Cecilia Music Center, from 7:15-9 p.m.

“The Fly” is the story of a Grand Rapids bartender who has a secret identity as The Fly — a renowned underground music artist and fan favorite. When a past lover returns to town and starts investigating for a story she is writing, they cross paths once again, and she begins to unveil his alter ego.

Emmy-winning director Kevin Budzynski and Scott Erickson, producer of The Grand Rapids LipDub, co-produced the film, which was shot by John Boros Productions, a Grand Rapids film company.

Erickson said that “The Fly” is told in the style of Prince’s film “Purple Rain” and original music and new songs by Willie the Kid are incorporated into music video sequences, which provide the backdrop to the story — which is a "gritty" and "inspirational" tale.

Erickson said the film was shot throughout downtown and shooting it was nothing but a positive experience.

“The film is set in a fictionalized GR, yes,” Erickson said. “We filmed all over downtown with the cooperation of the city and police department, etc. The main location would be The Pyramid Scheme, which is where the main character works and performs his big show at the end.”

Erickson added that as long as him and his partners continue to receive support locally, they don’t intend to go anywhere else for future projects.

“We like highlighting Grand Rapids and the entertainment talent that is hiding here,” Erickson said.

In addition to Willie the Kid, whose real name is William Jackson, the film also stars female lead Linnae Caurdy, who is a Grand Rapids/Rockford native and currently resides in Brooklyn.

Free ticket to the premiere can be obtained online.

An after party will be held at The Pyramid Scheme directly following the premiere.
