Hundreds of West Michigan walkers have volunteered to take part in Walk MS on Saturday, a regional fundraiser to support those affected by multiple sclerosis.

Opening ceremonies will begin 9:45 a.m. at Aquinas College’s Donnelly Center, at 157 Woodward Ln. SE.

The three-mile walk starts at 10 a.m. A light breakfast and snacks will be provided.

Walk MS is sponsored through the Michigan Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, a national nonprofit aimed at helping those affected by MS.

MS is a disease that interrupts the central nervous system’s information flow between the brain and the body. MS is found in 18,000 Michigan residents, according to the chapter.

In 2012, the MS society devoted more than $164 million towards services and programs, assisting over one million people with the disease.

The society's Michigan chapter said Walk MS is a "rallying point — a time and a place to stand together and to be together to help raise critical funds" to support research, advocacy, education and services.

Walkers can register for Walk MS online.
