A group of attorneys from West Michigan are being inducted into the 2018 class of Women in the Law by Michigan Lawyers Weekly.
Six women from West Michigan are part of the 30-member class of attorneys from across the state: Michelle Anthes of McShane & Bowie; Kimberly Baber of Varnum; Nikole Canute of Mika Meyers; Mindi Johnson of Foster Swift Collins & Smith; Kay Kossen of Kreis Enderle Hudgins & Borsos; and Jennifer Remondino of Warner Norcross + Judd.
The attorneys were selected by the editors of Michigan Lawyers Weekly and a peer-review group of attorneys for their accomplishments and commitment to the practice of law and their communities by serving as mentors and giving back.
There will be a luncheon on Sept. 20 at the Detroit Marriott Troy to celebrate the 2018 class of Women in the Law.
The Woman of the Year, selected by class vote, will be announced at the event.
The attorneys will also be profiled in a special section in the Sept. 24 issue of Michigan Lawyers Weekly.
Anthes is a managing partner at McShane & Bowie, where she has been working since 2005. She serves on the managing committee.
Anthes practices estate planning, and she is the chairperson for the firm’s estate planning practice.
She is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, Grand Rapids Bar Association, American Bar Association and West Michigan Estate Planning Council.
She is a graduate of Michigan State University and holds a J.D. from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law.
Baber is a member of Varnum’s corporate practice.
Baber focuses on banking and finance, business and corporate services, mergers and acquisitions, private equity services and raising capital.
She holds a B.A. in business administration from Michigan State University and graduated from the University of Michigan Law School.
Canute has been an attorney at Mika Meyers since 2005, she became a member in 2012.
Canute focuses her practice on labor and employment law, employment litigation, energy litigation, civil litigation, fraud investigation and litigation and securities litigation.
She is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, Grand Rapids Bar Association, Women Lawyers Association and Human Resources Group of West Michigan, and she is on the board for Family Promise.
She is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Notre Dame Law School.
Johnson leads the employee benefits practice group at Foster Swift Collins & Smith.
Johnson focuses her practice on employee benefits law, tax law, business and corporate law, employee stock ownership plans, HIPAA privacy and security compliance law, mergers and acquisitions, strategic transactions and alliances, employer services and health care law.
She earned her B.A. from Calvin College in 2001 and holds a law degree from St. Louis University.
Kossen has been an attorney at Kreis Enderle Hudgins & Borsos for 15 years and is a shareholder in the firm’s Battle Creek office.
Kossen practices real estate law, municipal, planning and zoning law, elder law, probate and trust administration law and estate planning law.
She focuses on residential and commercial transactions, real estate transfers of ownership, title defects, title ligation, real estate developments, condominiums and homeowners associations, as well as retirement planning, such as Medicaid benefits, trusts, wills, deeds and power of attorney documents.
Kossen is chair of the West Michigan Forms Committee, a member of the Michigan Land Title Association and serves on the Advisory Council of the Women’s Leadership Institute of Olivet College.
She holds a B.A. from Hope College and a J.D. from Thomas M. Cooley Law School.
Remondino is a partner in charge at Warner Norcross + Judd’s Holland office.
She is an estate planning attorney and chair of the firm’s trust and estates practice.
Remondino specializes in tax planning, estate and gift tax audits, formation and operation of family offices, trust and estate administration, governance agreements and business succession planning.
She is a member of Inforum, Lakeshore Advantage, the West Coast Chamber of Commerce and Holland Young Professionals.
She is a graduate of Michigan State University and MSU’s College of Law.
